eldritchhobbit: (HP/Snape/Tori)

Curtis Weyant, who is both an all-around terrific guy and my former graduate student, addresses Michael Moorcock's (in)famous "Epic Pooh" essay and its assertions about J.R.R. Tolkien's work in his latest blog post.

And now, here are the most important film scenes about Severus Snape - in chronological order. Watch this. For reasons.

I did watch those - thank you! It makes me want to watch them all again, properly in order... our Severus!

Yay!

YES! I feel the exact same way.

Oh, my eyeballs are burning from over use on work stuff today. I can't read all these articles at the moment. I started and was already getting annoyed and writing a rebuttal in my head. Comparing LotR to a simple children's story?! YARGH!

***

Anyway, OH, SNAPE! How his story shredded my heart! And I wasn't expecting that. HP is a fun thing for me. Unlike a lot of people, I was never that emotionally invested or saw all the characters as particularly heroic. (Way too much rule breaking and lying for my taste. I love all the kids and many other characters, but I had trouble with them too.) And honestly, Voldemort never scared me. I never quite got a sense of his motivations and such.

I'm a book fan more than a movie fan, but this is a case where the actor embodied the character for me so perfectly, and made him even more tragic and heartbreaking and heroic than what the book could convey.

I was gutted when I saw the scenes in the theater. I was not expecting that - not to that extent. I can't watch it or think about it even now without feeling that same, gut wrenching pain.

Even though that essay is almost as old as I am, it still steams me! Argh!

Yes! You said it. I think very highly of the novels, which is why I teach them, but from the very first I understood why J.K. Rowling wanted Rickman specifically for this part - and let him in on Snape's story from early on. He really nailed that role. As you say, he's perfect.

Saving the essay for later. I can't read it since I watched the video and my heart is still breaking.
