birthdays, birthdays, birthdays!
Jan. 3rd, 2006 09:04 amHappy birthday to
s_c_enigma and early birthday to
gilda_elise. May you both have a wonderful day, and many more to come!
Today also is the birthday of J.R.R. Tolkien, creator of Dwarves and Elves and all of Middle-Earth, who was born this day in 1892. I hope everyone will participate in The Tolkien Society's International Birthday Toast for 2006. Thank you, Professor, for your words!
Last but definitely not least, happy birthday to The Shire's Virginia Lórien, a.k.a. Virginia, the world's most beautiful Boston terrier and our best friend, who was born this day in 2002. We love you, little lass!

The quote for the day is from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien:
The leaves were long, the grass was green,
The hemlock-umbels tall and fair,
And in the glade a light was seen
Of stars in shadow shimmering.
Tinúviel was dancing there
To music of a pipe unseen,
And light of stars was in her hair,
And in her raiment glimmering.
There Beren came from mountains cold,
And lost he wandered under leaves,
And where the Elven-river rolled
He walked alone and sorrowing.
He peered between the hemlock-leaves
And saw in wander flowers of gold
Upon her mantle and her sleeves,
And her hair like shadow following.
Enchantment healed his weary feet
That over hills were doomed to roam;
And forth he hastened, strong and fleet,
And grasped at moonbeams glistening.
Through woven woods in Elvenhome
She tightly fled on dancing feet,
And left him lonely still to roam
In the silent forest listening.
He heard there oft the flying sound
Of feet as light as linden-leaves,
Or music welling underground,
In hidden hollows quavering.
Now withered lay the hemlock-sheaves,
And one by one with sighing sound
Whispering fell the beechen leaves
In the wintry woodland wavering.
He sought her ever, wandering far
Where leaves of years were thickly strewn,
By light of moon and ray of star
In frosty heavens shivering.
Her mantle glinted in the moon,
As on a hill-top high and far
She danced, and at her feet was strewn
A mist of silver quivering.
When winter passed, she came again,
And her song released the sudden spring,
Like rising lark, and falling rain,
And melting water bubbling.
He saw the elven-flowers spring
About her feet, and healed again.
He longed by her to dance and sing
Upon the grass untroubling.
Again she fled, but swift he came.
Tinúviel! Tinúviel!
He called her by her elvish name;
And there she halted listening.
One moment stood she, and a spell
His voice laid on her: Beren came,
And doom fell on Tinúviel
That in his arms lay glistening.
As Beren looked into her eyes
Within the shadows of her hair,
The trembling starlight of the skies
He saw there mirrored shimmering.
Tinúviel the elven-fair,
Immortal maiden elven-wise,
About him cast her shadowy hair
And arms like silver glimmering.
Long was the way that fate them bore,
O'er stony mountains cold and grey,
Through halls of iron and darkling door,
And woods of nightshade morrowless.
The Sundering Seas between them lay,
And yet at last they met once more,
And long ago they passed away
In the forest singing sorrowless.

Date: 2006-01-03 05:12 pm (UTC)I may head out to Tir Na Nog in Raleigh this evening and join the NC Fellowship for a toast in the professor's honor. It feels a bit odd going downtown by myself in the evening, but I will try to give myself a little nudge out of the door ;)

Date: 2006-01-04 08:07 pm (UTC)I hope you were able to meet up with the NC Fellowship for their toast. It sounds like it would have been a wonderful time! But even if you toasted at home, the important thing is that you remembered JRRT, right?! His works have brought so many of us together! (((Estellye)))

LOL! Thank you. That picture is one of my favorites, too. Total abandon, soaking up the rays. She got lots of treats, and was a very full and happy girl yesterday.

Date: 2006-01-04 01:37 am (UTC)You have the most outrageously fabulous pictures of her - Is she just so cute it's impossible to get a bad shot, or is the Viking a professional photographer as well?

Date: 2006-01-04 08:16 pm (UTC)Honest!!! That's how she ended up with "The Shire's Virginia Lórien" as her name. We knew a litter was due any day, but I had my fingers crossed for January 3. And there she was! :)
Thanks for the kind words about the pictures. Really, she can't take a bad shot. When we pull out the camera, she poses and freezes. She's a natural model. And if she's not in the mood to pose, she can quickly get into the mood if a Cheez-It is involved as a bribe. We actually make calendars with her pictures every year - one for my office, one for his, and one for the grandparents (who spoil her rotten when she visits). I don't know why anyone ever has children when you can have a Boston terrier instead!
