Thanks to all of you for your friendship throughout this past year (and what a dumpster fire of a year it's been). Here's to making the new year a better one! Happy 2017!

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light;
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Ring out the grief that saps the mind,
For those that here we see no more,
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.

Ring out a slowly dying cause,
And ancient forms of party strife;
Ring in the nobler modes of life,
With sweeter manners, purer laws.

Ring out the want, the care, the sin,
The faithless coldness of the times;
Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes,
But ring the fuller minstrel in.

- Alfred Lord Tennyson, "Ring Out, Wild Bells"

i think it's that old Chinese *curse* of a year, isn't it? (of course, no such saying in Chinese has ever been found, but it feels quite profound to assign it to an ancient (and wise/surviving?) culture:

"May you live in interesting times"

It would applicable, I think, to also add a quote from Bette Davis here: "Fasten your seatbelts. It's going to be a bumpy night".

Yes, an interesting and bumpy time awaits us, surely. Wonders we never would have imagined. And terrors that we've only assumed. And yet we will emerge stronger and wiser. And better, if we approach this challenge properly.

Happy New Year, everyone. And may you live in interesting times!

(I love that end of year poem....just the right note for this .....fog of a year!)

Happy New Year! I'm so glad this loathsome and wretched year is coming to an end.

2017 has to be better, doesn't it?

I love Alfred Lord Tennyson and somehow had never read that one before. Lovely.

A Happy New Year to you, too! And "dumpster fire of a year" is an excellent way to describe it.

Some would argue that statement does a disservice to dumpster fires. If nothing else, they offer some modicum of warmth to the more destitute among us.
