Let’s get our thirteenth annual Halloween Countdown rolling!
If you’re looking to get a head start on your Halloween viewing, A Tribe Called Geek has a list of “Must See Horror Films by Indigenous Filmmakers,” and Film School Rejects has a list of “25 Great No-Budget Horror Movies You Probably Haven’t Seen” and “The 17 Most Underrated Horror Films of the 21st Century.”
*****
Now let’s talk about this list: “30 Essential Silent Films You Should Watch.” I can vouch for each of those films listed in the “Horror and Suspense” and “Action/Adventure, Science Fiction, and Fantasy” categories, all of which are ideal for the Halloween season. These are terrific recommendations!

Earlier this year, after seeing clips here and there for decades, I finally watched the brilliant Witchcraft Through the Ages (Häxan) from 1922 in order in its entirety, and I regret not doing it sooner. What an amazing work, blending fantastic imagery with biting critique of historical witch hunts/trials. Don’t wait as long as I did!
Here is what Film School Rejects has to say about it:
Part docudrama of the history of witchcraft, part social commentary, this indefinable film laces incredibly disturbing imagery with pitch black humor. You will have nightmares and also laugh. The director plays the devil. No one who saw this film when it was first released knew what the hell to do with it—the review in Variety called it “wonderful” and “absolutely unfit for public exhibition” in the same sentence.

If you don’t have time just now for a full viewing, treat yourself to one of the most famous scenes; start at the 50:00 minute mark and watch as long as you dare!
