“We were walking back and I turned around one last time to look at the cemetery,” Drake said. “And I saw, running through the graves, this figure that was pure white–like it was white hot.”
- Julia Drake, quoted by Kentucky Haunts

Some of the spookiest local legends I’ve heard since moving to Kentucky relate to a burial ground that’s referred to as both Salem Cemetery and Gilead Cemetery in Madison County. Was the nearby church once a meeting spot for Satanists? I doubt it, but the rumors certainly set a mood.
This is a place where glowing red eyes are said to be seen after dark, white apparitions are said to dart among the graves, and a general sense of unease and fear is said to permeate the grounds. I saw nothing strange on my visit, but I can vouch for the unsettling vibes!
As you can see, some of the graves seem to be losing a struggle with the nearby woods.

The markers for two sisters’ graves struck me as particularly poignant. They are clearly too recent to be original, and they lack any death date. There must be a story behind them! (I’m not the only one to think so. Here is a post by the Graveyard Rabbit, who tried to investigate the mystery of the Williams sisters.)
