Han shoots first again!
May. 4th, 2006 06:02 amI can't even put into words how happy this makes me:
This September: Original Unaltered Star Wars Trilogy on DVD
Why yes, George, late is better than never. Thank you.
In publication news, my tribute to Octavia Butler, "The Parables of Octavia Butler," is now available in the hard-copy June 2006 issue of Reason.
Also, my scholarly article "Reimagining Rose: Portraits of Tolkien's Rosie Cotton in Twenty-First Century Fan Fiction" is now out in the new Winter/Spring 2006 issue of the journal Mythlore.
In the spirit of this Star Wars news, I offer a quote for the day:
Star Wars, old-school style!

Date: 2006-05-04 01:52 pm (UTC)I'm speechless. Really, I'm crying I'm so happy...
Unfortunately, Lucas has permanently damaged my appreciation of his work/genius with his absurd control issues over the years. I *could* compare him to a certain group of people but I'm sure that would draw all sorts of unpleasant comments to your journal. I can only imagine what the sets will cost - I have to say, I'm inclined to illegally copy a set (and not purchase) purely out of boycott/protest of Lucas' tactics and pricing policies over the years.

Scene: George Lucas' office:
George: I want to release the original trilogy on DVD.
Lackey: OK, but how about if make a few changes. We can muck up the story, and irritate the fans. They will still buy it, and then a few years later, we'll re-release the correct version. They'll buy it all over again.
George: I like the way you think, boy. Have a cigar.

Date: 2006-05-04 10:51 pm (UTC)And this will be the end of my Lucas boycott (I haven't bought the others, in protest against these originals being unavailable). I think I actually win some money on a bet about this, though - I didn't care what George said, I figured his greed would eventually overcome his promises to keep these originals under wraps. :)

"Yeah. I'll bet you have."

Date: 2006-05-04 10:57 pm (UTC)Seriously, I never understood what was up with those changes. Making him some sort of white knight smuggler (huh?!?) from the beginning totally diminishes the character transformation/evolution of Han over the three films. Making him an unapologetic badass makes for a much more interesting character arc.
And I'll admit it: I like my musically-challenged Ewoks. :)

And congrats on the being published again! Promise not to forget all us little people when you reach the top! :)

Shouldn't that be my line to you, Mr. RevSF Staff Writer? :):):)
Seriously, thanks for the kind words. I appreciate it.

Date: 2006-05-04 11:03 pm (UTC)LOL! I don't mind fancier explosions, but it seems to me that having Han shoot after Greedo makes his character transformation over the three films much less complex and interesting. His unapologetic "shoot first, apologize later" persona in the original version makes his character arc much more sophisticated and meaningful, I think. But hey, as the Trek fans say, Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. Different strokes for different folks! :)
Plus, I'm an old lady, and I remember the original version as the first "grown up" (that is, non-Disney) film I was allowed to see in the movie theater. I then wore Chewbacca kneesocks faithfully to my kindergarten class on a regular basis. :) So I'll admit the nostalgia level is pretty high for me.
The "May the 4th" is too funny! Good point indeed.
