October is here! This year for my Halloween countdown, with the invaluable assistance of my husband (and resident expert on all things Appalachian), I will be bringing you a spooky, Halloween-appropriate song with a twist of mountain flavor. I've chosen one version of each of these songs to share, but some have been recorded and reinterpreted many, many times.

If you like "Boograss" (or Spooky Bluegrass), Southern Gothic tales, traditional murder ballads, ghost stories, and/or Halloween chills, I hope you will enjoy each day's post!

oooh, another fun year, and starting with a favorite performer! I first ran across her in Ken Burns' series on Country Music, and I loved her!

I’m sure that I will; I already am! A modest suggestion; some people find it hard to understand all of the words of songs; it’s a brain-processing thing rather than hearing loss per se. It’s usually not hard to look up lyrics to a given song, but if you could post an additional link, one to lyrics, that would make your daily entries even better for some listeners! Great selections so far, BTW; kudos! :)

This is a great suggestion. Thank you so much! I am making a note of this for the future. I'm sorry to say several of these don't have lyrics online (or have fifteen bizillion different variations -- feast or famine!), so I've tried to share a spooky line or two to give some flavor. Wherever possible (as with the post today, on Tuesday), I've linked to a YouTube video that has lyrics posted underneath. I will look for ways to incorporate this recommendation, so the posts are as useful as possible! Thanks again!

Yes, I appreciate the steps that you already took, and even a few lyrics are better than none. And as I wrote, I personally can usually look up lyrics elsewhere anyway--when they're available (as you noted, sometimes they're not). I was just trying to make it easier for others. But I should have known that the Flame Imperishable would already be doing all that you could to enlighten everyone else! ;) Thank you, Amy; you rock! (Actually, you light! ;) )

Thanks! RG's version of "Little Margaret" is so, so good! I'm actually sharing another version of that song for today (Oct. 8), as a matter of fact. You're right, it's a very creepy song.
