I'm back! Happy belated birthday to
febobe, and happy early birthday to
janissa11. I hope both of you fabulous gals have a marvelous year to come!
Revolution Science Fiction has published a new interview with me, complete with pictures, particularly focused on The Magic Ring.
Mythcon 37 was simply wonderful. I was deeply gratified by the excellent responses to my Guest of Honor keynote speech, panels, reading, and signings. I saw many dear friends and colleagues, visited with my family (including my sister Margret, who is a graduate student there at the University of Oklahoma), and came back with wonderful notes, contacts, and ideas. It was a particular thrill to meet Lois McMaster Bujold (and hear her read from her forthcoming book) - and be portrayed and parodied with her by the Not-Ready-For-Mythcon Players! - and
vonjunzt (who presented some truly fascinating work on H.P. Lovecraft).

I am still recovering from the trip, and appalled by all I need to accomplish to meet some article deadlines and also prepare for my fall classes, so I may be a bit slower than I'd like in catching up with everyone. But I am here!
I did notice that I was tagged by
sneezythesquid for the "which one book" meme, so here goes:
1. One book that changed your life?
Just one? I'll go with Dune by Frank Herbert, for drawing me into the world of adult science fiction (long before I was an adult!).
2. One book you have read more than once?
Just one? Since the books I teach are a given (and that includes many of my loves, such as Tolkien, Lovecraft, Heinlein, Bradbury, etc.), I'll choose something entirely different: The Persian Boy by Mary Renault, who is another of my favorite authors.
3. One book you would want on a desert island?
Just one? The Last Man by Mary Shelley.
4. One book that made you laugh?
Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.
5. One book that made you cry?
The Doomsday Book by Connie Willis.
6. One book you wish had been written?
Whatever Emily Brontë might have written next had she not died so young.
7. One book you wish had never been written?
Something by Harold Bloom, I'm sure.
8. One book you are currently reading?
The Sharing Knife: Beguilement by Lois McMaster Bujold (an advance reader's copy - wheee!).
9. One book you have been meaning to read?
Just one? Ralph 124C 41+: A Romance of the Year 2660 by Hugo Gernsback.
I'm not tagging anyone, but I hope those of you who haven't yet done this will consider playing along!
It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

Yeah, he was one of the first for me, too (along with Clarke.) But the one who gets the credit for pulling me into science fiction in general is Andre Norton. :-)

I remember reading Dune and just being blown away.
And three cheers for Norton, too! ;)

So, was that the most challenging MeMe you have ever done in your life? It's like a mother choosing which child is her favorite. That would actually be an easier MeMe for you, lol: Virginia!

Date: 2006-08-11 12:56 pm (UTC)Yep, Virginia definitely is my favorite child! :-D I did one once that was lines from your ten favorite books. Only ten? I had a hard time with that one. LOL!
I love your icon, by the way. Three cheers for Ravenclaw!

Date: 2006-08-11 12:43 am (UTC)Just wanted to pop by and say hello and that I friended you! (I realize that at the con I forgot to mention that I do use my LJ for a lot of fic writing, including adult stuff and RPS, which I figure people I meet outside the LJ community need to know before friending)
I also have a filter for those people I've met in real life (at conferences and such) -- where I post a lot of stuff about my scholarship that I'm not going to put on open posts--if you'd like to be added there, let me know!
Good luck with the fall term--it was fantastic meeting you in person and talking at the con!

Date: 2006-08-11 02:09 pm (UTC)I am so excited to see that you write fan fiction. I love darkfic, AUs, and Boromir, so I was delighted to see what you've been writing; "In the Darkness Bind Them" is fantastic! I really liked the Boromor-Faramir dynamic (haunting!), and your vision of Aragorn with the Ring is fascinating. I can't wait to read "So Small A Thing."
I am so glad to have this opportunity to visit with you more. I hope your fall is excellent, as well. I also owe you some writing, which I'll have to you shortly! Take care. I look forward to keeping in touch!
