Bits and bobs to share
Aug. 14th, 2006 08:28 amNews to share:
* SFSite just published a new review of The Magic Ring.
* The American Library Association is gearing up to observe Banned Books Week next month with some great items, including a banned book bracelet for adults (with covers of adult banned books), a banned books bracelet for children (with covers of children's banned books), and an adult-sized bracelet with the children's book covers.
* I'm sure everyone has seen them by now, but the Star Trek motivational posters are hysterical.
* Done the Impossible: The Fans' Tale of Firefly and Serenity: A Documentary is now available. It's worth a viewing by Browncoats everywhere.
* I have updated my list of Joe Dawson-centric Highlander fan fiction here.
* Just FYI, my work-in-progress list of fan fiction recommendations (with labels for different universes) is here.

Date: 2006-08-14 02:56 pm (UTC)Not exactly a glowing review... What strikes me as really interesting - not really about The Magic Ring, but about the review industry(?) - Is how fascinating it is that reviewers have such *access* to those involved (in this modern age.) I think it's awesome he attempted to (and was successful in) contacting you (and others) via email to further investigate his misgivings. Amazing! I guess that's what *I* would call a good review (even if it wasn't, if you know what I mean.)

Date: 2006-08-14 03:03 pm (UTC)I, too, was impressed that he contacted me. And in the end, I was pleased with the review. I quibble with some of the parallels he draws - my take on the links are laid out in the text already, especially in the appendix - and Anderson's blanket statement - and I cite scholarship that questions his point - but I completely agree that the book stands on its own merits, and is most important, in the end, not because of its influences or what it influences, but because it is a beautiful story. I'm extremely happy that he finds it worth reading, "a very readable and entertaining novel, with numerous twists and turns, mysteries and secrets revealed, drawing and ably combining several rich myth-traditions." I'm not going to argue with a thumbs-up. ;)

Date: 2006-08-14 03:43 pm (UTC)I'm not sure how much they let the poster-children ;-) choose themselves... But maybe they do. Me? Just scanning down one of the lists quickly, I see Fade by Robert Cormier - One of my favorite books of all time. WTF??? I couldn't even begin to guess why it's on the list... Must look into that. So, I think that would be my choice (until I look more comprehensively at the past lists and think it out a little longer.)

Date: 2006-08-14 03:50 pm (UTC)Ok, I guess I never looked at it *that* way... Point taken. But everyone should still read it. ;-)

Date: 2006-08-14 05:35 pm (UTC)Are you on LibraryThing yet? Perhaps it's a bit too exposed for you but I, for one, am dying with curiosity to see your library. You can also sign up to be a LT Author.

Date: 2006-08-16 01:37 pm (UTC)LibraryThing fascinates me: on the one hand, I am really interested at seeing other people's libraries, but on the other hand, it does feel a bit exposing to "let everyone into my office," as it were. Not to mention daunting, considering the incredible time that would be involved. I don't even know where I'd begin! The idea of building communities out of book interests is what really appeals to me, though - like the one you just created! How cool is that?

Date: 2006-08-15 07:34 pm (UTC)I'm so glad you're enjoying the Lone Gunmen stories. I have a soft spot for post-apocalyptic stories anyway, but I particularly like those with the Gunmen. (One of those on the list is mine, by the way. So I guess it's not exactly a rec, since I wrote it. *blush*)
I actually have one of the "America's Future Is In Their Hands... God Help Us. The Lone Gunmen" posters in my office. Byers rocks my socks. Always has, always will. LOL!
