Warning: fannishness follows

Recently [livejournal.com profile] dodger_winslow reminded me how much I love the character of Joe Dawson (played by Jim Byrnes) from The Highlander. It struck me that I should collect in one place the links to some "must read" Joe-centric fan fiction. If you're interested, here's my list to date. Just wanted to say I've been reading "Sacred Trust" since you recced it last week, and I am absolutely loving it. Will post something more detailed in my LJ when I'm done with it. One of the good things about it (and I really do mean *only* one, as there are so many good things about it!) is that she has Joe's voice down really well. I've read a few fics whose writers just did not get Joe's voice, or had him using Britishisms when he spoke, that really threw me out of the story. I can hear Joe talking when I read this story.

Thanks for posting these--looking forward to checking more of them out.

I know exactly what you mean! I'm so glad you're enjoying it, too. I appreciate how spot-on the dialogue is, especially in terms of timing. Just when other writers might get maudlin or saccharine, LC brings in the gruff joke or wisecrack that keeps it in character, and leaves just enough unsaid. LC definitely has the "show, don't tell" strategy down perfectly! Like you said, I can hear them talking, and I can also see the action. There is a remarkable moment in Ch. 11 (which I won't describe just in case you're not there yet! *g*) that I can see just as clearly as if it had been on the TV screen. I love that!

There are a couple of these I found to be Kleenax-worthy. If you want an alert on those, let me know. And I'd love it if you'd let me know if you run across others I haven't listed. Thanks so much!

Yes, you're exactly right. She's got the "show don't tell" thing down, and I can see the action.

It's a bit more violent and bloody than I usually like, but the writing is so, so good. How do writers like this come up with so much plot and so much dialogue? It boggles my mind.

Uh-oh, I haven't gotten to any Kleenex moments yet. Eleven chapters! Wow, it's long. I think I'm up to chapter 5 or 6.

Mine, too!

I think that one ends up with 14 chapters or so. Very long. But I'm glad - I didn't really want it to end!

Most of the "Kleenax moments" are in some of the other stories. "Yeah, That One Last Thing" was the worst, I think, for that - a "hurts so good" kind of story.

Have you read Cindy R? She writes mostly about Connor and Duncan. But she has a story called The Bartender, which is about Connor, but obviously about Joe too.
