Two Important Birthdays

Happy Birthday to J.R.R. Tolkien, who was born this day in 1892. I hope everyone will participate in The Tolkien Society's Birthday Toast for 2005. Thank you, Professor, for your words!

And also happy birthday to The Shire's Virginia Lórien, a.k.a. Virginia, the world's most beautiful Boston terrier and our best friend, who was born this day in 2002. We love you, Hobbit girl!

Indeed, a most happy of Birthdays to The Professor and the cute dog. :)

I spent Sat watching The Extended RotK, 11am to 7pm (only watched half the appendicies). Watching the appendicies was fun, after bawling my eyes out (I'm man enough to admit it) at Theodin's death and the end of the flick. I only had one problem, while watching the appendicies. In the section where they talk about the Professor, the books, adapting them, and his hopes for them, I came to the realization: I'm a HACK!

But then, as my roommate pointed out to me, compared to J.R.R., most other writers are hacks. So I'll keep hacking away, just with no illusions of grandure.

Ah, if only other authors realized that they were hacks compared to JRRT... ;-) You're right, of course. Compared to what JRRT put into his work, little else can compare. And seriously, real men should cry at Theoden's death. I'm proud to know you! Thanks for doing your part to keep the Professor in the dialogue -- and the doggie thanks you for your good wishes, too! :)
